Civita Caves Boutique Hotel

Hotel Caves of Civita

“The Caves of Civita is a truly unique boutique hotel located in Matera, an ancient city in southern Italy. The old district of the town is literally carved inside limestone caves. The latter are connected to each other by narrow and winding streets. There is a church carved into the rock, not to mention half-carved stone dwellings. The Civitas Caves is a hotel also carved into the rock.

Construction began in 2006 and was completed three years later. The hotel is not like traditional hotels and holiday houses. It is a truly unique place steeped in antiquity and the famous Italian flavour.

Description

The boutique hotel consists of 18 comfortable rooms and a large restaurant. The extensive restoration work, which has been lasting for 10 years, has created a unique interior inspired by the past.

The hotel consists of three floors connected by terraces. The latter pass over the gorge. The caves are conservatively decorated with simple furniture, stone tiles on the floor, linen bedding, and a minimum of decoration.

Hospitality at Civita Caves

Guests are always welcome. Guests are welcomed with juicy seasonal fruits, fragrant wine, traditional desserts – all served with the warmth of the Italian mentality. You can dine at the hotel’s restaurant. But for those who are a little afraid of the confined spaces, you should head outside.

Despite the ancient and rather ascetic atmosphere, the comfort conditions here are plenty – under-floor heating, climate control and air ventilation, Internet access, hidden lighting etc. For its originality the hotel was awarded class four stars, which is very respectable in provincial Italy.

Hotel capacity

Unfortunately the hotel can accommodate about 40 people. In addition, Civita Caves is difficult to see from afar. This is the “appeal” of the hotel – a boutique hotel can rightly be considered the ideal place for a secluded holiday.

Outside there is a large terrace, verdant gardens and quaint surroundings that appeal to hikers in the evenings. Guests have access to a masseur as well as aroma oil and candle baths. All in all, Civita Caves is a cosy hotel, which is ideal for peaceful relaxation and blissful idleness.

The average cost of a room is 300 euros. A suite will cost almost twice as much. What can I say? Originality and individuality are not cheap pleasures.
